Duality in energy means that you can do the same thing in two different ways simultaneously.

Two sides of the coin? Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? The yin and yang of black and white? This is always inherent in human nature. It is possible to be good and bad simultaneously, to laugh and cry simultaneously, and not to talk about the pleasant atmosphere of a home dinner, which can turn into a dark cloud with hailstorms in a moment. That’s just the way we are – dualistic, and this is what both philosophers, Schrodinger (the famous example of the cat, which is alive and dead at the same time) and even religious mystics (here I recommend the works of the Manichaeans and Gnostics) wrote about. So it’s not surprising that the same thing … has appeared in energy.

The consultation of the NERC and, at the same time, the request for notification of the old agreement with the mining industry.

In addition to the fact that I love the word consultation (and sometimes even better – pre-consultation (it shows in advance that all the material is actually to be changed, and we throw it in so … presentational), it is the showing up officially of the NAPE documents (energy and climate two versions also with the ambitious one) should be viewed positively. More than half of the circle with the share of energy production in 2030 is already wholly green – Poland is entering a period of rapid transformation. There seems to be a breakthrough… but at the same time, we are notifying the old agreement with the mining industry on coal production until 2049. The documents are inconsistent with each other in the basic premise – in the NAPE – the transition away from coal is happening so fast that coal-fired power generation becomes marginal as early as 2035 (look at the gradient or absolute values of the decline in production and extrapolate that to yourself for the decade after 2030). At the same time, we are applying to the EU to approve subsidies in the billions for coal mining to last not only until 2040 but also until 2049, putting coal on the heap. This is where Polish sayings like “to the Lord God a candle, and to the devil a stub” come to mind, or as it has been for many years – we wink at industry (that we are transforming the energy industry) and mining (that we are digging and not changing) at the same time.

The return of competition in the energy market, but also a price freeze…

It was with surprise (but also surprise and optimism) that I saw ads on TV… of a company selling energy. It turns out that (at least in the commercials) the free market is back, and you can again think about switching vendors. There are also rumours that other companies are coming into the market with dynamic tariff offers, and some are supposed to be lower than current prices. On the one hand, I hope it’s over because there are still voices from the ministries that the price freeze will be extended for 2025. So we will have competition, new prices, and new companies, but prices will remain frozen. What’s more, there will be an increase in the distribution fee component and the level of the freeze, which in total could mean a 15% increase. More expensive, but therefore also cheaper or at least frozen – this is how one can sum up the state in which there is a free market and no market at the same time.

New billing tariffs for prosumers – better or worse.

Prosumers have done a lot for the Polish energy industry, and this can be seen, for example, in the complete postponement of the threat of a blackout on sunny summer days (so there will be no repeat of 2015). Not surprisingly, they need to be helped further and offered favourable regulations. One of the latest proposals is to change the current system (net-billing) and use dynamic pricing (actual during the day) instead of averages in billing payments for energy delivered from the prosumer to the grid. Wrapped in additional incentives, the new billing options boil down, in short, to paying them at the current price of the hour they produce. There’s some sense in that, but it will be hard to convince panel owners of the idea because all they have to do is look at the excellent iconography on reputable portals like High Voltage – pictured below.

You can see that the prices during the day (when PV) is produced are flying head and neck (in California, they are often hostile), so the proposed system will certainly not help prosumers increase their profits. Still, it will be better for that (as described in the proposal’s justification). So, it is both better and worse simultaneously, but no one is surprised.

Nuclear power—the government project, the other (Korean), and the proxy that is not there?

Nuclear power is a complex and thankless subject. Great expectations, but also great difficulties. This time – new reactors simultaneously appear and disappear. In KPEiK and other proposals (and many articles) – we must build, and we will have reactors in Poland. In detailed statements (e.g., the last answer to an interpellation – incidentally, even quite detailed), some reactors are already disappearing – such as the Korean one, so there are fewer already. In “government” statements, even the second power plant (or maybe even the second reactor – because the financing is attached only to the first one) is also disappearing. So it’s like that Schrodinger’s cat – it’s there and gone simultaneously – one can only keep one’s fingers crossed that it survives. What’s worse – even the Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure is disappearing – disturbing press releases mention problems and maybe even departure from the government (for me, a great pity – because it was excellent and substantive to talk with the current Plenipotentiary at the conference panels). The whole nuclear power industry (as we already know many times from the project’s history) has a rally and a simultaneous lack of it, which only confirms the theses in this satirical review.

Not only in the energy industry but also in politics, it is only…

In the end, energy is only the tip of all current economic and political processes. I found it somewhat satirical that one of the well-known MPs (who used to sing songs well) suddenly left the MP Circle (called by his name) and joined another. As you can see (as I think we all feel), in politics, it’s only possible to be for, against and abstain at the same time and even, depending on the days of the week, to appear in other parties and Circles, with holidays to work on creating new parties and associations. So, ahead of the energy industry … there are still many challenges.
